I woke feeling like it was Christmas morning, filled with excitement for the Little Pink families because I knew what was in store for their first full day in Key West.
Today was “Paddleboard Day,” hosted by Lazy Dog Paddle Shack of Key West. For many of our family members, as well as some of our volunteers, this was their first time trying out this “really-is-for-everyone” sport. The day could not have started out more perfectly: blue skies, sunshine, high tide and just enough breeze for comfort at Higgs Beach.
The pink and white tent marked the spot, allowing for a shaded spectator area full of Little Pink cheerleaders. I am not sure what was more brilliant, the sun or the smiling faces of all of the family members who were ready for a cool adventure. Sue, Heather and Holly, the gracious staff from Lazy Dog, offered first-time pointers on how to make the most of the paddleboard experience. They are patient and kind, and their dedication to SUP shines through.
The members of the Little Pink group eagerly entered the water, and within minutes, many were paddling off on their own with only the need for a few words of encouragement.
The term I heard over and over again as the ladies climbed on boards and accomplished a new challenge was “empowering.” It is empowering to have the audible support of others who relate to your story and how you deal with day-to-day stresses. It is empowering to know there are things that can still be accomplished while under the heavy burden of cancer.
I am blessed to interact with these special women. They empower me to live life to the fullest — Every. Single. Day.
